A bit part in Crazy Mama (1975) led to Quaid's first major role in 1977's September 30, 1955. He gained widespread critical attention as a rebellious townie in the sleeper Breaking Away (1979), resulting in higher-profile roles.
As astronaut Gordon Cooper in The Right Stuff (1983), Quaid scored a career breakthrough and bankable leading-man status. Dreamscape, The Big Easy (a cult favorite), Innerspace, Everybody's All-American, Great Balls of Fire!
